On June 9th, I was invited by the Director and Vice Director of the Department of Pharmacy, Professors Suodi Zhai and Yiheng Yang to provide a seminar on clinical pharmacy practice and to visit Third Hospital.

Clinical Pharmacy education in China is a very recent development. The Ministry of Education has approved an entry-level professional degree of master and/or doctor in clinical pharmacy similar to the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree in the United States. Peking University school of Pharmaceutical Sciences is a pioneer and leading the way to being one of the first schools in China to implement the Pharm.D. program starting Fall 2011. For more on this topic please refer to Professor Nie’s excellent paper published in AJPE 2008;72(6) Article 129.
Our UConn Pharmacy Study Abroad students officially graduated on friday June 17. The ceremonial day began with presentation of TCM certificates by Associate Dean Zhao of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

This was followed by a totally unexpected farewell “party” held in honor of our UCONN students, organized by the School of Foundation Education (our Mandarin teacher, Ding LaoShi’s dept) The party was hosted by professors Li Yanfeng (Dennis) and Wu Zhaoxia (Jenny) who are fluent in English. A number of Departments were represented (i.e. Department of Applied Linguistics and Physical Education). The Chinese faculty and students performed singing, dancing, and martial arts. Our American students sang their Chinese revolutionary song “Dong fung hong, tai yang sheng” “The east is red, the sun is rising”; All glory, laud, and honor; and a Mandarin skit performed by Celeste Karpow, Vijay Godsay, and Ruchita Bhgat. The party ended all too quickly with our students presenting the party organizers with flowers to show them our appreciation of all their effort on our behalf.

Evening Closing Banquet
The closing banquet was hosted by us at the “Masters Inn” located on the PUHSC campus. All teachers and graduate students who were involved in the teaching of the TCM and Mandarin classes were invited. We had a private room reserved for us. Altogether, there were 20 people present to partake of the sumptious feast laid before us. We ended the banquet with closing remarks made by Becky Smith and Celeste Karpow who presented notable highlights of their 5 week experience and made us all laugh very hard but also feeling sad at the ending. Very thoughtful gifts and cards to the teachers from our students were exchanged and we ended the finale of the evening with some more singing by our students and Tai Chi lead by Professor Yang.

Retrospectively, a group of our more adventurous students suffering from “insomnia” and perpetual “hunger” went to a 24-hour dim sum restaurant and feasted until 3 AM in the morning. Good thing, I didn’t know of this before hand. I might have had to accompany them and spoil their fun…..
With the approach of July 1, the date when the Communist Party of China was founded in Shanghai in 1921, the red song phenomenon has spread throughout the nation to mark its 90th anniversary. On the campus of Peking University’s Health Science Center, faculty and students from many different schools and health-system disciplines competed in a “red song” competition culminating on the evening of June 16 after many months of hard work and practice.
The UConn students and I were invited by our Mandarin Teacher, Ding Laoshi and the Dean of the Linguistic School, to participate in the celebratory events taking place this evening as their guests. Below are some photos of the gorgeous cosutumes, singing and dancing of different competing universities and hospitals. By the way, the Linguistic School came in second place – hurrah for Ding Laoshi and his Department!

After our Tasely visit in the morning followed by a very substantial and delicious luncheon at a local restaurant, we spent the rest of the afternoon visiting the cultural center of Tianjin and taking the famous Ferris Wheel ride built on the Yongle bridge overlooking the Hai River in Tianjin. The cost of the tickets were 60 yuan (about $10) for a breathtaking view of the city.

We took the gonggong qiche (bus) to No. 5, Bei Chen East Road, Chaoyang District, to visit the Science and Technology Museum located near the Bird’s Nest. Bus tickets cost 2 yuan per person (approximately 0.30 cents) but here’s the catch: bus drivers usually don’t speak a word of English and signs are only in Chinese. Luckily, we had 2 of Dr. Yang’s graduate students to accompany our group. We had an English-speaking tour guide at the museum who demonstrated exhibits beginning with ancient science, highlighting China’s technological pre-eminence in history.

China Science and Technology Museum features permanent exhibition organized under five themes of displays, namely “Science Paradise“, “The Glory of China“, “Explorations and Discovery“, “Sci-Tech and Life” and “Challenges and the Future“, plus many public space display zones; these are also four special-effect theaters, i.e. domed theater, giant screen theater, 4D theater and motion theater. The museum is also equipped with a popular science lecture hall, a number of popular science laboratories and workshops. There are lots of fun hands-on and interactive exhibits on 4 floors. Needless to say, we did not have time to visit exhibits on all 4 floors.

Peking University Health Science Campus where School of Pharmaceutical Sciences is located
The satellite campus of the Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC) is located on No.38 Xueyuan Road in the Haidian District. PUHSC has 6 schools on its campus, namely, School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Distance Education, and Faculty of Foundation Education.
In addition, PUHSC has 8 university hospitals, namely, the First School of Clinical Medicine (Beida Hospital), the Second School of Clinical Medicine (the People’s Hospital), the Third School of Clinical Medicine (the Third Hospital), Institute of Mental Health (the Sixth Hospital), School of Stomatology (the Dental Hospital), School of Oncology (Beijing Tumor Hospital), Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, Peking University Shougang Hospital. In addition, 13 hospitals in Beijing serve as teaching hospitals.
TCM (pinyin: zhōng yī: “Chinese Medicine”) is very commonly used and widely practiced alongside Western medicine throughout China’s hospitals and clinics. Typical TCM involves the combination of Chinese herbal medicines; acupuncture; chinese message therapy; mind-body therapies such as qi gong and tai chi; and dietary therapy. This program focuses on the training of herbal medicine, which is becoming an increasingly popular method of treatment in the west.
The UCONN TCM course is conducted at one of the most prestigious pharmacy schools in China, Peking University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (afiliated with the Peking University HSC), a sister school to the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. This is typically a 5-week learning experience running from May to June. Lectures are provided in English by faculty members of the Peking University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Professors Xiaoda Yang, Min Ye, and Siwang Yu). Each school day has 2 sessions: morning (9:00-12:00am) and afternoon (2:00-5:00pm) with daily TCM and Mandarin language classes.
Students take 36 hours of traditional Chinese medicine that includes TCM 1: TCM theories; TCM 2: TCM drugs and modern; TCM Lab: Preparation of traditional medical wine; and TCM Seminars: TCM therapies for metabolic diseases. In addition, several TCM field trips are usually planned. This year, the group took a 2-day trip to Haituo mountain to collect herbs; a trip to Tasley Inc in Tianjin (a TCM pharmaceutical company); Tongrentang Inc (China’s oldest TCM shop); and Peking University 3rd Hospital where TCM is practiced.
Students also study 30 hours of intensive Hanyu (Mandarin language class) under the dedicated teaching of Ding “Laoshi” 丁小卒 (Teacher Ding) from the School of Foundation Education, Department of Chinese Studies. Our students conversed, read, wrote sentences in Chinese characters and added Pinyin for each given Chinese character and translated them into English sentences. Typically each class ends with group singing of the Chinese revolutionary song “dong fang hong” (the “east is red”). For the final examination, students prepared and presented a Mandarin skit for a peer audience of Master of Science pharmacy students from 3rd hospital.
Cultural excursions to many famous sites included the breathtaking Great Wall of China; Ming Tomb; Forbidden City (Gu Gong); Summer Palace (Yihe Yuan); China Science and Technology Museum; and an acrobatic performance.
